How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Toronto?

A realistic, tier-by-tier breakdown of what GTA homeowners actually pay in 2026 — and the specific choices that move the number the most.

The honest answer is: it depends heavily on layout, materials, and whether plumbing or electrical is moving — but most Toronto-area homeowners can expect somewhere between $25,000 and $90,000+ for a full kitchen renovation, with the majority of mid-size projects landing in the $45,000–$65,000 range. Here's how that breaks down.

Cosmetic refresh: $25,000–$40,000

This tier keeps the existing layout — same footprint, same plumbing and electrical locations — and replaces cabinets, counters, backsplash, and appliances. It's the fastest and least disruptive option, typically completed in 3–5 weeks. Most of the cost here is cabinetry and countertop material; stock or semi-custom cabinets with a quartz counter make up the bulk of the budget.

Mid-range renovation: $45,000–$65,000

This is where most full kitchen renovations in the GTA actually land. It usually includes some layout changes (moving a sink or relocating an island), new flooring, updated electrical for under-cabinet lighting and additional outlets, semi-custom to custom cabinetry, and stone counters. Timeline typically runs 6–9 weeks once permits and material lead times are accounted for.

High-end / structural renovation: $70,000–$90,000+

This tier involves moving load-bearing walls to open up the kitchen to an adjacent room, relocating plumbing rough-ins, full custom cabinetry, integrated appliances, and premium natural stone. Structural work requires an engineer's drawing and a building permit, which adds both cost and lead time — budget 10–14 weeks for this scope.

What actually moves the price

Four things drive most of the variation between quotes for what looks like a similar-sized kitchen:

Moving plumbing or gas lines. Relocating a sink or stove even a few feet means rerouting rough-in plumbing or gas, which is one of the more expensive line items per foot of movement.

Cabinetry: stock vs. semi-custom vs. custom. This is usually the single largest cost category, and the spread between stock and fully custom cabinetry for the same footprint can easily be $15,000–$25,000.

Structural changes. Removing a wall between the kitchen and living or dining room is popular in older GTA homes, but if that wall is load-bearing, it requires an engineered beam, a permit, and inspection — adding real cost and time.

Counter material. Laminate, quartz, and natural stone (marble, soapstone) span a wide price range, and large islands or waterfall edges increase the square footage priced at the premium rate.
